Nonprofit Leader Q & A : Social Networking

What opportunity do you believe exists for nonprofit organizations to use social networking?
I believe that social networking is one of the best ways to actively promote your nonprofit and even raise funds. Social networking sites are free to use and can help to increase awareness to your cause unlike any other form of media. Facebook even has an application for nonprofits to raise money.

Have you worked with specific nonprofits that have been successful? What were the results you would consider a success?
I have had the opportunity to work with several nonprofits that have had positive results from social networking. Including raising funds to support their cause and raising awareness to people who may not have known about it before.

What type of investment, both in human and financial resources, are needed to launch a successful effort?
In order to launch a successful effort one must consider the following three things:
  1. Time Involved: Do you have the time or have the ability to hire someone to spend time daily being active on the social networks?
  2. Target Market: Who is your target market? This is important as you must be targeting the right audience to be effective.
  3. Strategy: What is your plan? What kind of results are you looking to achieve?
This means that in order to be successful with social networking you must spend the time to come up with a strategy and then spend the time to implement and manage it. Initially implementing all of the social pages can take up to 40 hours and involves the use of html coding to be successful. Management of the social sites should be at least an hour per day posting, blogging, and sharing.

What do you feel are important considerations for a nonprofit to make before getting started?
Finances, time available, labor available

What specific social networking avenues do you feel are best suited to non-profits?
Facebook is my favorite because they have a special section for nonprofits to raise awareness for causes.

What should nonprofits keep in mind when hiring a consultant with whom they would consider working?
Make sure that you hire someone that specializes in social networking as it will take them much less time to complete the work and end up costing less than hiring someone to spend full time focusing on social media.

What else do you think is important for nonprofits to know about utilizing social networking?
YouTube is also a GREAT way to raise awareness. People are very visual and use YouTube to find a lot of things now days.

Unless you have been living under a rock, then you know that Social Networking is everywhere you look today. There are magazine articles about it, businesses using it, and more and more people are doing it every day. Companies today are recognizing the limits of traditional advertising, and established companies are stepping into the social networking arena to promote their products.

Companies are turning to blogs, videos and websites such as FaceBook, YouTube, Twitter, MySpace and Digg — and their tens of millions of users — to reach consumers globally. Social Networking sites harness the age-old power of the word-of-mouth recommendation and can be incredible marketing and branding techniques.

With the current recession, corporate budgets have been slashed and ad sales are expected to drop in 2009. This means social media could prove to be the most cost-effective way to sell to consumers.

Dell was quoted as saying it has used Twitter to sell over $500,000 worth of refurbished PCs.
Yet another large technology company has also elected to dedicate 20 percent of its PR budget to social media.

New data from a survey of consumers by Opinion Research Corporation found that 85% of social media users believe that companies should interact with consumers through social media.
This is strong validation for social media marketing and reason to believe that social networking marketing is the wave of the future.
